Description
Beta test is over! The official server play is the real world! A lot of things are hidden under the veil of the empire-building game ‘Elix’. In this game, where the player becomes the ‘king’ and builds the country with the gods, the player’s character race is determined based on the aptitude test that is conducted before playing. Once you enter the game with the character that has been decided, the player has a helper god called ‘Daegong’. That was the beginning of the empire-building game, ‘Elix’. Elix was a game of extreme difficulty, where the player’s empire would collapse due to riots, coups, assassinations, etc. if they were tyrannical, lazy, or ruthless in building their empire. They also failed due to the invasion of other players. Nevertheless, many people were fascinated and intoxicated by Elix. After six months, the news of the official service of the game was announced to the world. Many people were excited and expected. But that was not something to be excited about, expected, or waited for. Yeah. That was not something to be excited about. The hand that choked his neck was suffocating. His toes barely touched the ground. The words he heard before folding. Sehyun still couldn’t forget the expression that was full of hatred. The forgiveness he begged for many times and the conversation he asked for many times were all trampled in front of the words of hatred. That’s why he decided to fold, and that’s why he couldn’t go that day. Afraid to face that expression again. Afraid to hear the words that he hates again. “It would be better for you to come on your own feet. Before I cut off your limbs and take you away.”

My Thoughts on How to Survive as a Player
"How to Survive as a Player" has been quite the experience, and I'm eager to share my thoughts. This novel dives into a world of adventure, fantasy, and mature themes, with a good dose of yaoi on the side. It definitely offers a unique premise that sets it apart from your typical transmigration story.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked. The world-building is compelling, drawing me into a complex setting where kings are constantly battling internal and external threats. The dynamics between the main character (MC) and the other characters were also a major draw. I found the idea of the MC being a "buff" character, strengthening others rather than being inherently strong himself, to be a refreshing take on the genre.
What Works Well
The found-family dynamic is undeniably charming. The relationships between the MC and his vassals are heartwarming, bordering on a parent/child or believer/god dynamic. Whether you interpret that as romantic is up to you, but the strong platonic bonds are definitely a highlight. I also appreciated the slow-burn romance between the MC and the male lead (ML), even if the misunderstandings could be a tad frustrating at times. The unique power dynamics, where the MC's strength lies in buffing others, adds an interesting layer to the story.
Areas of Concern
⚠️ Spoiler Warning: Proceed with Caution ⚠️
I did find some inconsistencies later in the story that were hard to ignore. There's a point where the MC's personality seems to shift, becoming almost too saintly and generous, which felt out of character compared to his earlier, more nuanced portrayal. The sudden shift towards a harem-like dynamic, with seemingly every male character vying for the MC's attention, also felt a bit forced and detracted from the plot. The ML's inconsistent behavior was also a bit jarring, swinging between anger, loyalty, and even crossing boundaries, making it difficult to connect with his character.
Final Verdict
Despite some flaws, "How to Survive as a Player" is still a worthwhile read, especially if you enjoy unique world-building and strong character dynamics. While the later plot developments and character inconsistencies were disappointing, the initial premise and heartwarming relationships make it an enjoyable experience overall. I'd recommend going in with an open mind and appreciating the story for its strengths, even if it doesn't fully live up to its initial potential.
