"Honey Stewed Squid" promised a fluffy, lighthearted romance, and while it delivered on some fronts, I found myself with mixed feelings. The story follows Tong Nian, a talented singer and computer whiz, as she falls head-over-heels for the seemingly cold and aloof Han Shang Yan, a legend in the e-sports world. It's a classic case of opposites attract, but the execution left me a little wanting.

First Impressions

Initially, I was charmed by the premise. A cute, determined girl chasing after a stoic, older man? It had potential. However, I quickly realized that the beginning can be quite divisive. Tong Nian's infatuation and pursuit of Han Shang Yan veered into territory that some might find overly aggressive or even borderline stalker-ish. I understand the desire for a proactive female lead, but her actions sometimes felt a bit much.

What Works Well

Despite my reservations, the novel has its strengths. Many readers, including myself, found the interactions between Tong Nian and Han Shang Yan endearing. There's a certain sweetness to their relationship, especially as Han Shang Yan slowly warms up to her. I also appreciated the focus on e-sports, which added a unique flavor to the story. The author's writing style, while perhaps not deeply profound, is certainly engaging, and the translation (at least what I read of it) seemed well-done. Tong Nian, while presented as intelligent and talented, often came across as naive and even a bit air-headed. Her "genius" moments felt somewhat random and disconnected from her overall personality. Han Shang Yan, on the other hand, initially felt like a fairly stock-standard cold male lead. While he does develop over time, I didn't always feel a strong connection to him. The reasons behind their attraction also felt somewhat underdeveloped.
