"Hello, Mr. Zhou" promised a sweet and heartwarming story, and for the most part, it delivered. This novel blends romance, slice-of-life, and a touch of the entertainment industry into a fairly engaging narrative. It’s not without its flaws, but overall, I found it to be an enjoyable read.
First Impressions
I have to admit, the initial chapters didn’t immediately grab me. The story starts off a little slow, and I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the novel. The setup involves a one-night stand between the female lead (FL), an entertainment agent, and the male lead (ML), her boss, resulting in an unexpected pregnancy. While this trope can be interesting, the beginning felt a little forced, with both characters seemingly pushing against their feelings. However, I persevered, and I'm glad I did.
What Works Well
What really shines in "Hello, Mr. Zhou" is the dynamic between the leads after they commit to their relationship. The romance becomes genuinely sweet, and I appreciated the lack of unnecessary drama or drawn-out misunderstandings. Their communication is good, and they support each other well. The slice-of-life aspect, focusing on the FL's career as she navigates the entertainment world, also adds a nice touch. I also found their son, Zhou Simu, absolutely adorable. His antics and the way he interacts with his parents brought a lot of joy to the story. The ML's devotion to his family is also a refreshing change from some of the more "characterless" CEOs I've encountered in similar novels. He's genuinely caring and supportive, and that made their relationship all the more endearing.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I do have a few minor criticisms. The beginning felt a bit rushed, and I wish there had been more development of the romance between the leads before the time skip. It felt like their feelings jumped from mild interest to deep love a little too quickly. Additionally, some of the side characters, particularly the FL's mother, felt a bit one-dimensional and unlikeable.
