My Thoughts on General’s Fiery Farmwife

First Impressions

"General's Fiery Farmwife" definitely piqued my interest with its blend of josei romance and farming elements in an ancient setting. The "ugly to beautiful" and transmigration tags added another layer of intrigue. I was hoping for a heartwarming story with a strong female lead carving out a new life for herself. I dove in expecting a delightful rural romance, and while it had its moments, some aspects left me wanting more.

What Works Well

The male lead, a general, seems to be a consistent bright spot. The story seems to be quite progressive in dealing with sensitive subjects, such as the aftermath of r*pe, in a thoughtful and non-exploitative manner. The author seems to be willing to tackle difficult topics, and creating characters that are allowed a happy ending, instead of being forever miserable, is a welcome change.

Areas of Concern

However, I found some aspects of the story jarring. The initial descriptions of the female lead's weight were problematic. The story's portrayal of beauty standards felt quite toxic and outdated, which created a sense of unease.

The pacing also felt off. The story jumps forward in time frequently, glossing over potentially interesting developments. It's a shame, as I feel more depth and emotional resonance could have been achieved with a slower, more deliberate narrative. A plot point would occur, be resolved in a few sentences, then a time skip would be introduced.

However, issues with pacing, problematic beauty standards, and a declining translation quality ultimately detracted from my enjoyment. It’s an okay read if you're willing to overlook these flaws, but it didn't quite live up to its potential. I'd give it a cautious recommendation, perhaps with the advice to proceed chapter by chapter to assess the translation quality.
