My Thoughts on From the Center of the World
First Impressions
"From the Center of the World" grabbed my attention right away with its intriguing premise: a radio broadcast in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. The short story format also appealed to me, promising a quick yet hopefully impactful read. I dove in expecting a tense, character-driven narrative, and I wasn't disappointed.
What Works Well
The story's greatest strength lies in its atmosphere. It masterfully creates a sense of isolation and despair, amplified by the limited perspective of the radio host, A. The mystery surrounding A's identity and her eventual fate kept me hooked. The story explores themes of loneliness, mental health, and the desperate search for human connection in the face of unimaginable horror. I found the character of A particularly compelling; her descent into despair felt believable and emotionally resonant. The relationship between A and her first listener, Satou, adds a layer of hope amidst the bleakness. Satou's determination to fulfill A's final wish provides a satisfying, albeit bittersweet, resolution.

Final Verdict
"From the Center of the World" is a short but powerful horror story that lingers in your mind long after you finish reading. Its exploration of isolation, mental health, and the human need for connection in the face of apocalypse makes it a worthwhile read. While the short length might leave some wanting more, the story's impact is undeniable. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a quick, emotionally resonant, and thought-provoking zombie story.
