Tang Yu’an’s family ran a small grocery store, and every day after school, he would help out by watching over the shop. That afternoon, his parents had gone out to buy supplies, leaving only him in the shop. The System went into hibernation, confident that it would need to switch hosts upon awakening. But to its shock, when it awoke again, two young teens were thriving in the wasteland world, with “Peace Grocery Store” locations all over. And— Its System warehouse was empty! The precious items and rare skills it had accumulated across countless hosts—all gone! My Thoughts on Doomsday Grocery Store
First Impressions
"Doomsday Grocery Store" immediately grabbed my attention with its unique premise: a family supermarket transported to a post-apocalyptic world, dragging along a 12-year-old boy and his 15-year-old childhood friend. The apocalypse genre is well-trodden, but this one felt fresh, a blend of horror, romance, and the supernatural, with a healthy dose of "level system" mechanics thrown in for good measure. I went in expecting a dark, gritty tale, but what I found was surprisingly heartwarming.
What Works Well
What truly shines in "Doomsday Grocery Store" is the world-building and infrastructure development. I'm a sucker for stories where characters start from scratch and build something substantial, and this novel delivers on that front. Watching Tang Yu'an (MC) and Zhou Qi (ML) navigate the wasteland, establish their store, and gradually improve their surroundings was incredibly satisfying. The author does a fantastic job of making you care about the characters, both main and supporting. Their relationships feel genuine, and their shared goal of returning home creates a strong emotional core. The shounen-ai aspect, while slow-burn and innocent, is well-developed and adds another layer of charm to the story. It's more puppy love than passionate romance, which, given the characters' ages, feels appropriate and endearing.
Areas of Concern
The ages of the main characters might be a sticking point for some readers. The MC starts at 12 and the ML at 15, which means the romance is very slow to develop. While I appreciated the innocence and realism of this approach, some readers looking for a more explicit or faster-paced romance might be disappointed. I also felt that the ending, while satisfying, could have been explored a bit further. I was left wanting more of this world and these characters.

Despite a few minor drawbacks, "Doomsday Grocery Store" is a delightful read. It's a unique blend of genres with a focus on world-building, character development, and slow-burn romance.
