My Thoughts on Disguised Love
"Disguised Love" promised a lighthearted romance with a dash of comedy, and while it delivered on some fronts, it also stumbled in others. The premise itself – a romance novelist attempting to seduce a man for research – is intriguing, but the execution left me with mixed feelings.
First Impressions
I went into this novel expecting a fluffy, entertaining read, and initially, it seemed to deliver. The slice-of-life elements were enjoyable, and the idea of a female protagonist trying to navigate the complexities of love while writing about it was amusing. However, as I delved deeper, some issues started to surface.
What Works Well
The lighthearted tone is definitely a strong point. The author does a good job of creating a world filled with wealthy characters and the kind of everyday scenarios that make for easy reading. The comedy, while not laugh-out-loud hilarious, provides a pleasant backdrop to the central romance. I can also appreciate the complete story arc, offering a satisfying conclusion for those who stick with it.
Areas of Concern
My main issue lies with the central trope and the characters' actions. The female lead's "seduction" tactics often felt more deceitful and borderline stalkerish than charming, and I struggled to connect with her motivations. Her naivete in matters of love, while perhaps intended to be endearing, sometimes came across as frustratingly dense, especially considering her profession as a writer. The male lead's tolerance of the situation, and his pre-determined engagement, created a morally grey area that I found difficult to overlook. The plot, while functional, lacked the depth and complexity I usually look for in a romance novel.
Final Verdict
"Disguised Love" has the potential to be a fun read for those new to the romance genre or those who enjoy a very lighthearted, somewhat cliché story. However, if you're looking for a more nuanced and morally sound romance with well-developed characters, this might not be the book for you. Ultimately, it's a matter of personal preference; while I didn't personally connect with it, I can see why some readers might find it enjoyable.
