Description
I was the daughter of a wealthy merchant, married into the Marquis’s household to ward off bad luck. On the first day of my marriage, the old Marquis choked to death on his medicine. On the second day, my sister-in-law drowned after falling into the water. On the third day, my brother-in-law fell from a horse and died. A month later, the entire Marquis’s household was dead, leaving only me and the young Marquis. We stared at each other. The young Marquis initially wanted to divorce me to save his own life. My Thoughts on Cursed Delicate Wife
"Cursed Delicate Wife" is quite the ride! I went in expecting a typical historical romance, but what I found was a quirky comedy with a dash of political intrigue, all wrapped up in a relatively short and sweet package. This novel definitely has a unique charm that kept me entertained.
First Impressions
Initially, I was a bit thrown off by the female lead. She's definitely... unique. A wealthy merchant's daughter thrust into the world of aristocracy, she's far more interested in balance sheets than courtly politics. This led to some hilarious situations, but also moments where I wondered just how clueless she truly was. However, this obliviousness is clearly intentional and becomes a major source of the story's humor.
What Works Well
The comedy is definitely the strongest element here. I found myself chuckling at the absurd situations the female lead stumbled into, often completely unaware of the danger (or ridiculousness) surrounding her. The author's writing style, combined with the excellent translation, really brought the humor to life. I particularly enjoyed the way the story plays with the audience's awareness, often highlighting the contrast between the MC's limited perspective and the larger machinations at play. The plot, while predictable at times, still managed to surprise me with its unconventional twists. I also appreciated the absence of common tropes like rebirth or transmigration. It was a breath of fresh air to read a historical story that felt grounded in its own world.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I did find myself wishing for a bit more depth in certain areas. The political conflicts, while present, felt somewhat underdeveloped. I would have loved to see more detail on the motivations and implications behind the scenes. Also, the female lead's situation, while played for laughs, occasionally bordered on tragic. It's easy to laugh at her obliviousness, but there were moments where I felt genuine sympathy for her predicament, especially considering her pregnancy.
