My Thoughts on Codename Anastasia
"Codename Anastasia" is definitely a novel that leaves a mark, though whether that mark is a positive or negative one seems to vary wildly depending on the reader. I went in knowing it was a bit of a gamble, given the tags, and I came out with some mixed feelings.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked. The premise of an intelligence agent entangled with a top-tier Russian mafia boss is undeniably compelling. The early chapters drew me in with their tension and intrigue. I found myself eager to see how the cat-and-mouse game would play out between Taekjoo, the "black bunny," and Zhenya, the "crocodile." The world-building and action sequences were also well done, painting a vivid picture of a dark and dangerous underworld.
What Works Well
The author's writing style is a definite strength. I found the descriptions immersive, making it easy to visualize the action and the characters' emotions. The characterization, particularly of Zhenya, is complex and, for some, captivating. Many readers praised the slow-burn romance (if you can even call it that), noting that the story carefully builds the connection between the leads, however twisted it may be. Several readers also praised the translator's work, which clearly enhanced the reading experience. For those craving a toxic love story with morally grey characters, "Codename Anastasia" seems to hit the spot.
Areas of Concern
However, the novel's darker elements are very dark, and they're not for everyone. The non-con themes, including instances of rape and torture, are prominent and can be deeply disturbing. Some readers felt that the plot became disjointed in the later half, with the initial "Anastasia" storyline being abandoned. Others struggled with the character dynamics, finding Zhenya's actions irredeemable and the relationship bordering on Stockholm syndrome. It's crucial to heed the trigger warnings before diving in, as this story doesn't shy away from uncomfortable and potentially triggering content.

Final Verdict
"Codename Anastasia" is a polarizing novel. If you're seeking a traditional romance with fluffy moments, steer clear. However, if you're drawn to complex, morally ambiguous characters and don't mind exploring the darker side of human nature, this might be a worthwhile read. Just proceed with caution and be prepared for a potentially unsettling experience. For me, it was a mixed bag – well-written and engaging in parts, but ultimately too disturbing for my personal taste.
