Initially, I was captivated. The concept of dream-walking held immense potential, and the intricate family relationships within the aristocracy offered a rich tapestry for storytelling. The early chapters painted a vivid picture of court life and the protagonist's initial struggles, drawing me into her world.
What Works Well
The world-building, especially in the beginning, is a strong point. The author skillfully crafted a believable ancient Chinese setting, filled with political intrigue and complex social dynamics. I also appreciated the character growth displayed, particularly in the earlier parts of the novel. The evolution of Bai Li and her navigation through treacherous court politics was compelling. The devotion of the love interests, while perhaps a bit over-the-top at times, did add a layer of emotional depth to the story.

However, as the story progressed, I found myself growing increasingly disappointed.
