Description

Kakazu Kio, a senior high school student in Okinawa, Japan, woke up to find a strange girl beside him giving off the soft, steady sounds of a person sleeping. Moreover, there are cat ears and a tail growing out of her! In front of the bewildered Kio, his childhood friend appeared carrying breakfast. With a stern voice she asked, “Where is the pretty girl who returned with you yesterday? Introduce me!” Just as these two harsh sentences were about to turn into a full-blown pe*vert denunciation meeting, the beautiful by-the-books teacher, Itokazu Maki, burst in, making things even harder for Kio. However… this cat-ear girl who calls herself Eris is, in actual fact, an alien! But a mysterious group that refuses to accept this kind of alien contact as well as the CIA, not to mention the Japanese Intelligence Agency, are all reaching out their grubby hands towards the lighthearted Eris! “Stop it! What did Eris ever do to you?!”

Asobi ni Iku yo! Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator

My Thoughts on Asobi ni Iku yo!

First Impressions

Okay, so I dove into "Asobi ni Iku yo!" with a bit of trepidation. I knew going in that the anime adaptation is... well, known for its ecchi elements. So, I was prepared for a wild ride. What I wasn't prepared for was a surprisingly engaging sci-fi story lurking beneath all the fan service. It's definitely a series that demands you look past the surface to appreciate its deeper layers.

What Works Well

The world-building is genuinely fascinating. The concept of aliens interacting with Earth, the political intrigue, and the various factions at play kept me hooked. The action sequences are well-paced, and the sci-fi elements are cleverly integrated into the plot. I also found myself enjoying the characters more than I expected. The protagonist, Kio Kakazu, isn't just some clueless harem magnet; he actually steps up to protect those he cares about. And the supporting cast, especially his uncle and the android assistants, add a lot of humor and heart to the story. The romance aspect, while definitely a harem, is handled with a surprising amount of depth in the novels, especially compared to the anime. It feels like the author put genuine thought into the relationships and the characters' feelings.

Areas of Concern

The genre-hopping might not be for everyone. One moment you're dealing with political conspiracies, and the next, you're in a lighthearted school life scenario. It can be a bit jarring at times. Also, if you're strictly opposed to ecchi or harem elements, this probably isn't the series for you. While the story is more than just fan service, it's still a significant part of the package.

Final Verdict

Overall, I found "Asobi ni Iku yo!" to be a surprisingly enjoyable read. It's a fun blend of sci-fi, action, comedy, and romance, with a dash of ecchi thrown in for good measure. If you're willing to look past the surface and embrace the series' unique blend of genres, you might just find yourself pleasantly surprised.
