My Thoughts on Apocalypse: I Can Hear the Inner Thoughts of Others
This novel had me hooked with its premise: a protagonist reborn into an apocalypse with the ability to hear the inner thoughts of others. The potential for strategic maneuvering and character development seemed immense. While it started strong, my enthusiasm unfortunately waned as I progressed.
First Impressions
The initial chapters were definitely gripping. The idea of using mind-reading in a post-apocalyptic world felt fresh, and the protagonist's early decisions seemed logical, even if a bit ruthless. I was eager to see how he would build his power base and navigate the treacherous landscape.
What Works Well
The world-building is one of the stronger aspects of this novel. The author establishes a decent foundation, and the plot development involving other groups besides the MC is engaging. I appreciated the focus on acquiring strength and power, as it felt appropriate for the setting. The early stages of the apocalypse and the MC's initial rise were compelling.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, several issues detracted from my overall enjoyment. The mind-reading ability, which is the core concept, seems to fade into the background after the first few dozen chapters. Instead of being a strategic tool, it becomes almost an afterthought.
The protagonist's characterization also became problematic for me. While a ruthless MC can be interesting, some of his actions felt gratuitous and unnecessary, making it difficult to connect with him. The addition of a harem also felt forced and cliché, with the "xiao jun's harem" concept being particularly jarring and out of place. The sudden appearance of "number one beauties" felt like a lazy plot device.
Additionally, the story suffers from pacing issues. There are frequent time skips where the MC isn't actively involved, leaving me feeling disconnected from the action. The interactions with the female characters often felt poorly written and cringeworthy.
Final Verdict
"Apocalypse: I Can Hear the Inner Thoughts of Others" has a compelling premise and decent world-building, but ultimately falls short due to inconsistent characterization, a neglected core ability, and a reliance on tired tropes. While the beginning showed promise, the execution falters, leading to a disappointing reading experience. I'd give it a tentative 3 out of 5 stars.
