This historical romance with a strong female lead certainly offers a unique blend of slice-of-life and business management in ancient China. While the title might suggest a vengeful, power-hungry protagonist, I found the reality to be a bit more nuanced, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of a divorced woman building a successful life for herself and her family. The tags like "magical space" and "black belly" piqued my interest, promising a potentially OP protagonist. However, as I delved deeper, I realized the story takes a more grounded approach, focusing on her entrepreneurial spirit and family dynamics.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of this novel is the family dynamic. The protagonist's relationships with her parents and brothers are heartwarming. Her eldest brother's unwavering devotion, while potentially leaning towards "sis-con" territory, is ultimately portrayed as endearing. I also appreciated the slow-burn romance with the male lead. Their relationship develops gradually, from mentorship to friendship to love, which feels much more organic than insta-love scenarios. The author does a good job of showing us the gradual development of the relationship so that it feels earned. The business aspects of the novel are also well-developed. The female lead's resourcefulness in leveraging her knowledge and limited system abilities to build her wealth is engaging.
Areas of Concern
The main area where I felt the novel faltered was with the villain, Jiaojiao. While intended to be a significant antagonist, she often came across as more annoying than threatening. Her repetitive schemes and lack of genuine intelligence made her feel like a tiresome obstacle rather than a compelling rival. I also found some of the fates of certain side characters, particularly within the second brother's family, to be excessively bleak and somewhat disproportionate to their actions.

Despite some flaws, "After Being Divorced, I Led My Maternal Family to the Pinnacle of Success" is a worthwhile read. It has earned a solid 3.5/5 stars from me. The strong family relationships, the gradual romance, and the female lead's business acumen are all compelling. While the villain and some of the side character arcs could have been handled better, the overall story is engaging and offers a satisfying slice-of-life experience in an ancient Chinese setting. It's a story about family, resilience, and building a better future, even after setbacks. I will add that I personally won't reread this novel.
