"A Western Doctor's Happy Farming Life" had a premise that really pulled me in: a modern surgeon transmigrating to ancient China, pregnant, and ready to use his medical knowledge. Sadly, my experience was a bit of a rollercoaster, with some highs quickly followed by some pretty significant lows.

First Impressions

Initially, I was intrigued by the concept of a doctor bringing modern medicine to a historical setting. The early chapters had a certain charm as the MC navigated his new life and budding relationship. It felt like a potentially heartwarming slice-of-life story, with a unique twist on the usual transmigration tropes.

What Works Well

The male lead, Wu Dahu, seems to be a real standout. I found myself drawn to his character, and many others echoed this sentiment. His devotion, maturity, and genuine care for the MC were definitely highlights. I also appreciated the initial novelty of the medical aspect, especially the MC's attempts to adapt his modern knowledge to an ancient setting. Some readers have also pointed out that the author did some research into ancient medical practices, which can be seen in the smallpox arc.

Areas of Concern

However, as I continued, several issues began to surface. The MC's characterization became increasingly problematic. I noticed many readers finding him tactless, naive, and even selfish at times. His actions often seemed illogical, and his tendency to jump to conclusions without listening to the ML was frustrating. The plot also became repetitive, with each arc following a similar pattern of helping others, facing repercussions, and moving on. This lack of originality made it hard to stay invested. Also, I think the title is a little misleading, because the slice-of-life farming aspect is only in the beginning.

Final Verdict

Ultimately, "A Western Doctor's Happy Farming Life" didn't quite live up to its potential. While the premise and some characters like the ML were appealing, the problematic MC, repetitive plot, and questionable character decisions made it difficult to fully enjoy. While I appreciate the effort and the unique elements, I can't wholeheartedly recommend this novel. It's a 2.5/5 for me.
