Description

What does it mean when a man likes another man? What kind of book should I read to know more about this?” “That man is so old, he’s four years older than me! But he seems to be very rich. When I searched him online, he was on the ‘Billionaires List’. He’s from a completely different world from us. You come from a good background yourself, do you know him? Can you help me look into what kind of person he is? I’m afraid of Xiao Yuan being deceived.” “Xiao Yuan, that child, is such a fool. He even said at the table that he thought you and I were a couple seeing how well we got along with each other and how we would always go out to play together. He only vaguely remembered that last night, Ji Wei had said that he would tell him what it meant for a man to like another man. He had readily accepted this offer and even praised Ji Wei, saying that he was truly his best friend. My Thoughts on A Bowl of Sweet Soup
"A Bowl of Sweet Soup" promised a comforting slice-of-life experience, and for the most part, it delivered. This collection of short stories focuses on three brothers and their respective romances, each offering a unique flavor to the overall narrative. While not every story resonated with me equally, the experience was, on the whole, enjoyable.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of multiple protagonists and the familial love aspect. The idea of a series of interconnected stories, each focusing on a different brother, felt like a refreshing take on the romance genre. I was eager to dive into the lives of the Tang siblings and see what kind of sweet romances awaited them.
What Works Well
The first arc, centered around the eldest brother Tang Xuen, truly shines. It's a delightful friends-to-lovers story, and I found myself completely invested in his relationship. The translation is also particularly smooth and easy to read, which significantly enhanced my enjoyment. The author does a great job of portraying familial love and the dynamics between the brothers, making the story feel grounded and relatable. The focus on the family business also adds a nice touch of realism.
Areas of Concern
While I appreciated the overall concept, I did find myself less interested in the other brothers' stories. The age gap in the youngest brother's romance raised some concerns for me. While others might not be bothered by it, it personally made me uncomfortable. I also noticed that the description primarily focuses on the eldest and youngest siblings, potentially overlooking the middle child's story. I feel the middle child's story has just as much of a right to be advertised as the other two, and it's very disappointing to see that it isn't.

Final Verdict
Despite some reservations about certain elements, "A Bowl of Sweet Soup" is ultimately a worthwhile read, especially if you enjoy lighthearted romance and slice-of-life stories. The first arc is particularly strong, and you can easily choose to only read the stories that appeal to you without feeling like you're missing out on too much. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a sweet and comforting read, as long as you're aware of the potential triggers and content warnings. I give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
