My Thoughts on You’ll Regret It
"You'll Regret It" certainly promises a rollercoaster of emotions right from the start. The premise alone grabbed my attention: a young woman, Yuri, enduring unimaginable cruelty from childhood, striking a deal with a mysterious entity. It's a dark fantasy setup with the potential for intense character development and, hopefully, cathartic revenge.
First Impressions
The initial chapters paint a bleak picture of Yuri's life. The sheer volume of suffering she endures is almost overwhelming. From being ostracized due to her mother's reputation as a "witch" to the horrific abuse she faces at the temple, it's clear this is a story designed to tug at your heartstrings, maybe even rip them out. The introduction of the Darkness as a potential savior offers a glimmer of hope, albeit a twisted one. This being's offer of granting her wishes in exchange for a seemingly simple task sets the stage for a morally complex journey.
What Works Well
The early world-building and the portrayal of Yuri's initial resilience are compelling. Despite the constant abuse, she clings to a fragile hope, which makes her suffering all the more poignant. The author excels at creating a character you immediately sympathize with, making you desperate for her to find some semblance of peace or, better yet, unleash some well-deserved retribution. The setup is fantastic, promising a story of overcoming trauma and rising above adversity.

Areas of Concern
My biggest concern revolves around the direction the story ultimately takes, particularly concerning the endgame love interest. The idea that Yuri might end up with her abuser is deeply troubling and, frankly, a major turn-off for me. This narrative choice undermines the entire premise of overcoming trauma and achieving a satisfying resolution. It feels like a betrayal of the character's journey and a disservice to readers seeking a story of empowerment. I, like many others, hoped for a story where Yuri reclaims her agency and finds genuine happiness, not one where she's further victimized.
Final Verdict
While the initial chapters of "You'll Regret It" hooked me with its dark premise and sympathetic protagonist, the potential endgame spoiled the experience for me. The author's handling of such a severely abused character is disappointing. The novel had the potential to be a powerful story of resilience, but the choices made ultimately led to a tragic outcome that left me feeling more frustrated than fulfilled. Therefore, despite the compelling beginning, I find it difficult to recommend this novel.
