First Impressions
Initially, I wasn't entirely sold on the female lead (FL). Her deep-seated inferiority complex, stemming from her upbringing, made her feel a bit too passive. She seemed to avoid facing reality, which was frustrating. However, I also recognized a certain relatability in her struggles. It's easy to see how such insecurities could develop, and I appreciated the story's attempt to portray a more realistic, albeit flawed, character.
What Works Well
The novel shines in its portrayal of the high school memories shared between the leads. These flashbacks are truly the gems of the story, offering heartwarming and comedic moments that kept me engaged. The narrative flows well, balancing past and present events effectively. I also appreciated the quality of the translation, which made the reading experience smooth and enjoyable. One of my main reservations revolves around the male lead (ML). I found his overconfidence and constant teasing of the FL to be off-putting. While some playful banter can be endearing, his remarks often felt like they were undermining her self-esteem. The focus on physical appearance, particularly weight, also felt problematic. The FL's initial disinterest in the ML due to his weight, and his subsequent comments about her weight, created a sense of vanity that detracted from the romance. I also struggled with some of the ML's actions and reactions throughout the story. At times, he seemed quick to anger and unfairly blamed the FL for situations, making it difficult to fully root for their relationship.
