My Thoughts on When I Announced A Divorce, The Obsessive Maniac Went Crazy
This novel certainly took me on a rollercoaster! "When I Announced A Divorce, The Obsessive Maniac Went Crazy" promises a wild ride, and it definitely delivers... for a while, at least. The premise is intriguing, and the initial chapters had me hooked, but the experience ultimately became a bit of a mixed bag.
First Impressions
Right off the bat, the story plunges you into a world of misunderstandings and over-the-top characters. The female lead, Daphne, is fixated on the idea that she's living in a BL novel, even as the male lead, Cesare, becomes increasingly obsessed with her. This setup is initially hilarious, with a delicious blend of confusion and jealousy. The early chapters are fast-paced, and Daphne's decision to seek a divorce early on felt like a refreshing change from the usual dragged-out plots.
What Works Well
The humor is definitely a strong point. The sheer absurdity of the characters' actions and conclusions had me laughing out loud. I also enjoyed the dynamic between Daphne and Cesare. His obsessive tendencies, fueled by jealousy, are entertaining, and I was rooting for them to overcome their misunderstandings. Some readers praised the initial lightheartedness and how the story played with common tropes in a fun and engaging way. The novel also explores the familiar trope of a "love interest falls in love first", which some readers may find enjoyable.
Areas of Concern
However, my enthusiasm waned as the story progressed. The core issue seems to be the repetitive nature of the plot. Daphne gets entangled with Gabriel, Cesare gets jealous, Cesare lashes out, and Daphne remains oblivious to the true nature of Cesare's feelings. This cycle becomes tiresome, and the characters' continued lack of communication becomes frustrating. I also noticed that Daphne's unwavering belief in the "original" plot, even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, stretches the limits of believability. The translation quality was also brought up as a point of concern, with some finding it confusing and difficult to follow.

Final Verdict
"When I Announced A Divorce, The Obsessive Maniac Went Crazy" has moments of genuine humor and an intriguing premise, but the repetitive plot and frustrating characters ultimately detract from the overall experience. While the beginning is promising, the story struggles to maintain its momentum, and the lack of character development becomes increasingly apparent. I'd recommend this novel with caution, suggesting readers proceed with tempered expectations.
