My Thoughts on The Demon God Returns as a Max Level Player
"The Demon God Returns as a Max Level Player" promised a blend of action, family drama, and a powerful protagonist, and for the most part, it delivered a fun, if somewhat predictable, experience. It's a story where Earth faces a dungeon outbreak, and our MC, after becoming a literal Demon God in another world, makes a deal to return home, albeit depowered, with his family being his primary motivation.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me with the premise of a max-level character adapting to a weaker body and a changed Earth. The focus on family from the get-go was a refreshing change from the usual revenge or world-saving plots that often dominate this genre. It’s clear the author wants you to care about the MC's loved ones, and I appreciated that.
What Works Well
The action is definitely a strong point. Seeing the MC navigate dungeons and deal with threats, even in his weakened state, is entertaining. I particularly enjoyed that he doesn't hide his power. He's proactive about protecting his family, which leads to some satisfying confrontations. The supporting characters also aren't complete idiots, which is a welcome change of pace. They recognize the MC's strength and potential, and that makes for a more engaging story.
Areas of Concern
However, the novel does have some flaws. The romance tag feels misleading, as the female lead doesn't appear until quite late in the story, and the MC doesn't seem particularly interested in romance. There's also a repetitive cycle of arrogant characters challenging the MC, getting defeated, and then being replaced by someone even more arrogant. This can become tiresome after a while. I also felt the system aspect could have been better integrated. The MC's vast knowledge of skills doesn't always translate into system recognition, which feels like a missed opportunity. Finally, while the family aspect is a strength, the execution sometimes feels a bit "edgy," with the MC's reactions not always aligning with his supposed experiences.
Final Verdict
Overall, "The Demon God Returns as a Max Level Player" is a decent read. It has its flaws, particularly in the repetitive nature of the conflicts and the somewhat misleading tags. However, the focus on family, the satisfying action, and the proactive protagonist make it an enjoyable experience, especially if you're a fan of gate/hunter stories with a slightly different focus. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5.
