Solo Leveling: Ragnarok Review & Spoilers - Novel Translator
My Thoughts on Solo Leveling: Ragnarok
As a big fan of the original Solo Leveling, I was both excited and apprehensive about Ragnarok. Sequels, especially those following up something so iconic, can be tricky. Does Ragnarok live up to the legacy? Let's dive in.
First Impressions
Initially, I was a bit thrown off by the change in tone. Jinwoo's son, Suho, has a different personality than his father. He's more playful, more outwardly calm, and less of the brooding, silent type we're used to. Some might find this refreshing, others might miss the stoicism of the original MC. It really boils down to personal preference. The premise, with Jinwoo seemingly sealing his son's powers and leaving him vulnerable, also raised some eyebrows. It felt like a strange starting point, almost setting Suho up for a difficult life unnecessarily.
What Works Well
Despite my initial hesitations, I found myself enjoying the story. The world-building is solid, expanding on the established lore of Solo Leveling in interesting ways. The action is engaging, and the mysteries surrounding Suho's powers kept me hooked. I also appreciated the returning characters, now older and in different roles. It's fun to see how their lives have progressed and how they interact with the new generation of hunters. I also have to mention the translation group currently working on the project, they're doing a great job!
Areas of Concern
One of my biggest concerns is whether Suho can truly step out of his father's shadow. The comparisons are inevitable, and the story needs to establish him as his own character with his own unique motivations and strengths. There's also the risk of rehashing the same plot points as the original. While callbacks and references are welcome, Ragnarok needs to forge its own path to avoid feeling repetitive.
Final Verdict
Solo Leveling: Ragnarok is a decent sequel that builds upon the world of the original while introducing a new protagonist with his own challenges. While it has its flaws, including the shadow of its predecessor and some questionable initial plot choices, it also offers a fun and engaging read for fans of the series. If you enjoyed Solo Leveling, I'd recommend giving Ragnarok a try, just be prepared for a different tone and a protagonist who isn't quite as overpowered (at least, not yet).
