Description
The Devere Empire, known as the land of God, had been suffering from years of drought. As everyone was in despair, one day, a prophecy from the only God of the Devere Empire had finally come down. ‘As the Almighty God proclaims,The Saintess must conceive, and all of man’s sin shall thus be forgiven.’ However, the faces of all those gathered to hear the divine prophecy turned as white as a sheet. The Saintess shall conceive? Yet, what other sin could be more sinful than this? * * * “Indeed, what a le*d saintess you are.”“Wait, wait…!” As the woman moaned at the top of her lungs, the onslaught of org*sm was not far away.In the end, she cried and begged him to stop. “…Ahn, nngh. Don’t do this, please. God might be watching!”“You’re wrong. God would be very pleased to see you like this. He was the one who ordered you to conceive a child.” However, in response to her plea, the man went on to push in another finger inside her, and his hand continued to go in, and out, and in and out and—Even though she did not wish to react to the man’s touch, she felt her body getting hotter and hotter. The fluids leaking from her lower body started to soak the man’s pants, as well as the chapel’s pew on which they were seated. “Haht! Hhn. Ahh, s-stop, sto… HAH!”“You cannot lie in front of God, dear Saintess.”“Hnngh, ahh, no, I— I’m not a s-saintess…” No longer could she hide the pleasure that had come to arrest her entire being. The woman, who had been ravaged by the man’s touch, opened her eyes widely, and all she could see was the statue of the one and only God holding a cross in front of His chest. If only she could, she would curse God as much as she wanted. What in the world is Your intention in making me yearn for the touch of not a husband, but another man?Dear Benevolent God, how could you do this to me?

My Thoughts on Saintess
"Saintess" is definitely not a novel for the faint of heart. Going into it, I knew I was stepping into a world of dark themes and potentially triggering content, but even with that preparation, I found myself reeling at times. This isn't a fluffy fantasy romance; it's a brutal exploration of power, corruption, and the devastating consequences of religious dogma.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the European-esque setting and the promise of a strong female lead. However, it quickly became apparent that "strong" in this context doesn't necessarily mean a triumphant heroine. Instead, we're presented with a character subjected to horrific abuse, a victim of a system designed to exploit and control. The story dives deep into the psychological impact of this abuse, making it a truly harrowing read.
What Works Well
Despite the darkness, I found the novel compelling. The author doesn't shy away from depicting the ugly realities of power imbalances within religious institutions. The mature content, while disturbing, feels intentional, serving as a commentary on the hypocrisy and violence often masked by piety. The world-building, while not the primary focus, creates a believable backdrop for the unfolding tragedy, enhancing the sense of dread and injustice. The pacing keeps you engaged, desperate to see if there's any glimmer of hope for the protagonist amidst the darkness.
Areas of Concern
While I appreciate the novel's intent, the sheer volume of graphic content can be overwhelming. It borders on gratuitous at times, and I questioned whether some scenes were truly necessary to convey the story's message. Readers sensitive to depictions of sexual violence, self-harm, and psychological abuse should proceed with extreme caution. The lack of genuinely redeemable characters also contributes to the bleakness, making it a challenging read for those seeking escapism or a satisfying resolution.
Final Verdict
"Saintess" is a powerful, albeit disturbing, novel that tackles complex themes of religious corruption and abuse. It's not a light read, and it's definitely not for everyone. However, if you're prepared to confront its darkness and can appreciate its social commentary, it's a story that will leave a lasting impact. Just be sure to heed the trigger warnings and approach with caution. I feel like I'll need something light and fluffy after this read!
