My Thoughts on Run Away, From Me
"Run Away, From Me" promised a dark romance with a capital D, and while it delivered on the darkness, my overall experience was a bit of a mixed bag. The story dives deep into themes of abuse, manipulation, and psychological torment, set against a medieval, aristocratic backdrop. If you're looking for sunshine and rainbows, steer clear. But if you're intrigued by morally grey characters and a plot that doesn't shy away from uncomfortable territory, keep reading.
First Impressions
Right off the bat, the relationship between Daphne and Asherad is…intense. He's the textbook definition of a yandere, and not the charming kind. He's cruel, manipulative, and seems to derive genuine pleasure from Daphne's suffering. Daphne herself starts as a fairly typical naive heroine, subjected to his torment. It’s a tough read, and I definitely felt a sense of unease throughout my time with the novel.
What Works Well
The novel's strength lies in its commitment to Asherad's twisted nature. He remains consistently awful, which, in a strange way, is compelling. The author doesn’t try to redeem him or soften his edges, and that consistency is admirable. The plot, while heavily focused on the central relationship, does involve some aristocratic intrigue, adding another layer to the story. For readers who enjoy a deep dive into the psychology of abusive relationships, this novel offers a disturbing but potentially fascinating exploration.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue lies with the execution. While the premise is intriguing, the writing itself felt somewhat lacking. The author pairs a truly evil ML with a FL that doesn't quite stand up to him. I felt the potential for a truly compelling dynamic was missed by not giving Daphne a stronger, more cunning personality. Additionally, the 18+ scenes, while present, didn't quite land. They felt more mechanical than emotionally charged, which detracted from the overall impact. Finally, the ending felt rushed, as if the author was eager to wrap things up without fully exploring the consequences of the characters' actions.

Final Verdict
"Run Away, From Me" is a darkly themed novel that might appeal to readers who enjoy exploring morally reprehensible characters and abusive relationships. However, the execution falls short of its potential, with weak writing and a heroine who doesn't quite measure up to the villain. Proceed with caution, and be prepared for a disturbing but potentially underwhelming read.
