"Romance" is definitely a title that sets expectations, and this story gleefully subverts them. It's a tangled web of court intrigue, tragic backstories, and obsessive love, far from your typical happily-ever-after. I went in expecting one thing and came out feeling like I'd been through an emotional wringer – in a good way, mostly.

We have a cold, hated Queen Dowager, Mohiresien, and her stepson, the King, Graceus III, who harbors a rather intense obsession with her. Family dynamics are already complicated, but add in a dead son, a cruel former king, and a whole lot of resentment, and you've got a recipe for some serious drama. It's clear this isn't going to be a lighthearted read.

What Works Well

The character of Mohiresien is the anchor of the story. I found her unwavering resolve compelling. She's not a damsel in distress, nor is she easily swayed by the King's affections.
