Description
Queen Dowager Mohiresien and King Graceus III are enemies. Queen Dowager Mohiresien wanted to usurp the throne and give it to her son, Julius, but was defeated, and Julius was beheaded at the hands of his half-brother, Graceus III. But Graceus III kept Queen Dowager Mohiresien, the main culprit of this rebellion, alive… * * * “I’m jealous of the eyes of the men who see your back. I envy someone else’s hand that will touch your loose hair. I hate someone who will receive your smile. You may not believe it, but indeed I do.”Graceus III slowly bowed down and took her hand again. He put his lips on the back of her hand, which was the only thing he was allowed to do. He did so for a long time, because he did not want to let go of her hand that he had caught, and he did not want to separate from the hand that his lips touched.“Don’t smile at someone who isn’t me, don’t show your back to someone who isn’t me, don’t give your hand to someone who isn’t me, don’t give your heart to someone who isn’t me. Mohiresien, Mohiresien, don’t put anyone in your frozen heart.”Not even me. A love that can’t be achieved. No matter what.Even if you’re the kind of person that everyone in the world can’t help but love.

My Thoughts on Romance
"Romance" is definitely a title that sets expectations, and this story gleefully subverts them. It's a tangled web of court intrigue, tragic backstories, and obsessive love, far from your typical happily-ever-after. I went in expecting one thing and came out feeling like I'd been through an emotional wringer – in a good way, mostly.
First Impressions
Right off the bat, I was struck by the sheer messiness of the relationships. We have a cold, hated Queen Dowager, Mohiresien, and her stepson, the King, Graceus III, who harbors a rather intense obsession with her. Family dynamics are already complicated, but add in a dead son, a cruel former king, and a whole lot of resentment, and you've got a recipe for some serious drama. It's clear this isn't going to be a lighthearted read.
What Works Well
The character of Mohiresien is the anchor of the story. I found her unwavering resolve compelling. She's not a damsel in distress, nor is she easily swayed by the King's affections. Her motivations, rooted in the loss of her family and the injustices she's suffered, drive the plot forward. The author does a fantastic job of portraying her internal struggles and the weight of her past. I also appreciated the exploration of how love can be twisted and destructive, leading to pain and misery rather than joy. The novel isn't afraid to delve into the darker aspects of human emotion and familial relationships.
Areas of Concern
The narrative structure did bother me a little. The story sometimes revisits the same events from different perspectives, and while this offers insight into the characters' minds, it can become repetitive. I also felt the ending was somewhat rushed. After a slow burn of building tension and complex relationships, the conclusion felt a bit abrupt, leaving me wanting more closure, especially concerning certain characters.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Romance" is a captivating and thought-provoking read. It's not a lighthearted romance; it's a dark, complex drama that explores the destructive power of love and the enduring strength of the human spirit. If you're looking for a story that will challenge your expectations and leave you pondering its themes long after you finish reading, then I recommend giving this one a try. Just be prepared to have your heartstrings tugged – and maybe broken a little.
