Description
“Emperor Laskaris! Let’s pull out your eyes and get rid of future troubles!” The year when the promised future got closer than ever. The supposedly delightful Christmas gift contradictably ended in a devastating ruin. And even the Empire began to fall on a hellish curve. “I don’t care if I become a villain. If I can change my civilization and the fate of my country, I will gladly call it my burden.” On August 26, 1258 AD, with a memory of 50 years between dreams and reality, eight-year-old Ioannes Laskaris woke up from a long sleep and the world around him changed forever!

My Thoughts on Return of the Eastern Roman Emperor
First Impressions
"Return of the Eastern Roman Emperor" immediately grabbed my attention with its premise: a determined protagonist working to rebuild the Eastern Roman Empire. As someone who enjoys alternate history and kingdom-building stories, I was eager to dive in. The early chapters paint a vivid picture of the setting, throwing you right into the political intrigue and challenges facing our protagonist.
What Works Well
The novel shines in its depiction of the protagonist's journey. Seeing him navigate the complex web of Byzantine politics, reclaim Constantinople, and then contend with the Mongol threat in the Middle East is genuinely compelling. I particularly appreciated the focus on assimilation strategies with the Muslim kingdoms; it added a layer of depth and realism that kept me invested. The author clearly put a lot of thought into the historical setting, and it shows. The world feels alive, and the struggles of the characters are palpable.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the ride, I did find some aspects a bit jarring. The shifting point of view, especially the jumps between the MC's current self and his future self, occasionally disrupted the flow and made it hard to fully immerse myself in the moment. It's a stylistic choice that didn't quite land for me, and I think the narrative would have been stronger with a more consistent perspective. Also, the ending felt somewhat rushed. After such a detailed build-up, I was hoping for a more substantial conclusion that truly explored the long-term implications of the protagonist's actions.

Final Verdict
Overall, "Return of the Eastern Roman Emperor" is a decent read if you're a fan of historical kingdom-building novels. The protagonist's journey and the world-building are definite strengths. However, the inconsistent POV and somewhat underwhelming ending prevent it from reaching its full potential. I'd recommend it with a few caveats, but it's not a must-read in the genre.
