My Thoughts on Ranker’s Return
"Ranker's Return" promised a familiar yet engaging VRMMORPG adventure, and after diving in, I've got some mixed feelings. It definitely has its high points, but some aspects left me wanting more.
First Impressions
The initial premise is fairly standard: a former top player returns to a game after life throws him a curveball. The setup felt a little rushed, particularly the downfall of the MC's family, which seemed more like a convenient plot device than a well-developed story point. I can see how some readers might find the MC's initial arrogance and subsequent fall from grace off-putting.
What Works Well
Despite the shaky start, the novel picks up steam once the MC re-enters the game. The power progression, while rapid, is undeniably satisfying. The humor, especially in interactions with certain NPCs, provides a welcome levity. I also appreciated the moments where the protagonist isn't necessarily a "good" person, adding a layer of complexity to his character. The world-building, while not groundbreaking, is internally consistent enough to keep me invested. The story can be fun if you're looking for an OP MC mowing down everything in his path.
Areas of Concern
The pacing feels uneven. The initial chapters rush through crucial backstory, while later parts of the story drag on, especially concerning the antagonist's revenge plot. I agree that the plot can feel forced at times, with events conveniently aligning to benefit the MC. The dialogue can be stiff and unnatural, making it difficult to connect with some of the characters. The MC's constant luck in acquiring rare items and skills also stretches the limits of believability, even within the context of a VRMMORPG.

Final Verdict
"Ranker's Return" is a mixed bag. If you're looking for a thought-provoking, deeply nuanced story, this might not be it. However, if you're willing to turn off your brain and enjoy a relatively fast-paced, OP MC adventure, you might find it entertaining. It has its moments of fun and engaging gameplay, but be prepared for some plot contrivances and uneven pacing along the way. Ultimately, I'd give it a tentative 3/5 – enjoyable in parts, but not without its flaws.
