My Thoughts on Praise the Orc!
"Praise the Orc!" is a VRMMORPG novel that initially gave me pause, but ultimately won me over with its surprising depth and heartfelt exploration of honor, morality, and the connections we forge, both in and out of the game. It's definitely not your typical power-fantasy VR romp, and that's precisely what makes it so compelling.
First Impressions
I'll admit, the premise felt a little shaky at first. The idea of a former soldier diving into a VR game to protect his sister from potential harassment seemed a bit… contrived. The "Orc as a Creator's Mistake" trope also felt like a tired cliché. I almost didn't give it a chance, but I'm glad I persevered.
What Works Well
What sets this novel apart is its focus on character development and the surprisingly rich world-building. The protagonist, a veteran struggling with PTSD, finds a sense of purpose and belonging within the game, forging genuine relationships with both players and NPCs. The NPCs, in particular, are a highlight, possessing depth and personalities that far surpass the cardboard cutouts you often find in this genre.
The exploration of morality within a virtual environment is also handled exceptionally well. The novel grapples with questions of when it's right to kill, when it's right to stand up for what you believe in, and what it truly means to be a warrior. The strong emphasis on honor and the protagonist's adherence to a strict moral code are refreshing and inspiring. The action scenes are engaging, and the plot keeps you invested as the protagonist navigates the game's political landscape and uncovers a deeper conspiracy.
Areas of Concern
The early chapters can be a bit slow, and some readers might find the initial premise off-putting. Also, some find that the main character's motivations seem contradictory. It is also noted by some that the real world elements of the story are lacking.

Final Verdict
Despite my initial reservations, "Praise the Orc!" is a surprisingly moving and thought-provoking novel. It's a story about honor, friendship, and finding meaning in a virtual world. If you're looking for a VRMMORPG with depth, heart, and a protagonist you can genuinely root for, I highly recommend giving this one a try. Just be prepared to stick with it through the initial chapters, and you might just find yourself shouting "Bul'tar!" along with the rest of us.
