My Thoughts on Please, Divorce Me
"Please, Divorce Me" is a web novel that certainly knows how to tug at the heartstrings, even if it occasionally trips over its own feet in the process. It's a rollercoaster of emotions, and while I wouldn't say it's a perfect ride, it's definitely one I won't forget anytime soon.
First Impressions
Going in, I was prepared for a heavy dose of angst, and this novel certainly delivered. The premise is simple: a woman, Aelle, falls for a grieving duke, Kyle, and proposes a contractual marriage to shield his beloved widow from scandal. Predictably, things go south, leading to the titular request for divorce. It’s a setup ripe for drama, and the author doesn't shy away from exploring the depths of despair.
What Works Well
What really shines here is the author's ability to convey raw emotion. The pain, the longing, the guilt – it all feels incredibly visceral. I was particularly impressed with the portrayal of both main characters. Kyle, though often frustrating, is a broken man haunted by his past, making his coldness somewhat understandable. Aelle, despite her questionable initial choices, is portrayed with a realistic blend of strength and vulnerability. I appreciated that the author didn't shy away from showing her darker, more selfish thoughts, making her feel like a flawed, relatable human being. The translation is also excellent, smoothly conveying the story's melancholy atmosphere.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the melodrama, there were moments where the plot felt a bit muddled. The timeline could be confusing, making it difficult to gauge the actual duration of the marriage. I also found Kyle's eventual change of heart a bit abrupt, lacking the necessary build-up to feel entirely believable. The motivation behind it didn't feel as solid as the character's earlier stoicism.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Please, Divorce Me" is an engaging and emotionally charged read. If you're a fan of angst, unrequited love, and characters who thoroughly suffer, this novel is definitely worth checking out. Just be prepared to shed a few tears along the way. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
