Description
Born in 1990 for over twenty years, life has been smooth sailing for Lin Qile, a girl from a small town, with no hardships or misfortunes. Her only regret might be that she never experienced a youthful romance. For over twenty years, Jiang Qiaoxi, the golden boy, has lived through a blend of joy and sorrow. The year he met Lin Qile, he believed he had encountered a stroke of great luck. — The newspaper once reported that in 1990, 26.21 million people were born in China. Among them were Lin Qile, Du Shang, Yu Qiao, and countless classmates, colleagues, friends, and family members around her. Naturally, Jiang Qiaoxi was one of them too. * Childhood sweethearts with a hint of rivalry; heaven-sent childhood friends; 1v1; happy ending. * A slice-of-life urban romance. The protagonists belong to the first generation born in the 1990s. The story follows the growth of a girl from a small town to a big city, eventually reaching the milestone of marriage. * Jiang Qiaoxi (Qiao). * The notes at the end of each chapter are for readers born after 2000 (if any). They mostly reference things from around the turn of the millennium and can be skipped. Lin Qile, a carefree and innocent girl living in the compound of a state-owned enterprise in a small town, is cherished and protected by her friends and family. Her life is simple and happy. At the age of nine, she meets Jiang Qiaoxi, a moody transfer student from the provincial capital, a math prodigy who soon becomes intertwined with her life for the next twenty years, filled with both joy and sorrow. As these two young people with contrasting personalities grow up, their lives change with the turn of the century, the relocation of their hometown, and the country’s economic development. Together with their friends, they experience the sweet and bitter moments of growth, eventually gaining a life experience unique to China’s post-90s generation. As the first batch of post-90s approaches the threshold of thirty, looking back at their life journeys, they have lived through thirty years of rapid economic growth, clashes between old and new values, and a society constantly evolving. Starting from the millennium, this story tells a tale of courage and independence, of family, parents, and education, and most importantly, of love. The story is filled with a wide range of characters, rich with the details of the era, capturing the myriad of life experiences, the pains of growing up, and the blessings that come with it. My Thoughts on Our Generation
"Our Generation" promised a slice-of-life romance set against the backdrop of a changing China, and having finished it, I can say it mostly delivered on that promise. It's a heartwarming story about growing up, enduring friendships, and finding love, all wrapped up in a package that’s easy to get invested in.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn in by the premise: childhood friends navigating the complexities of life from school uniforms to wedding dresses. The early chapters did a good job of establishing the characters and their relationships, particularly the female lead, who is undeniably the heart of the story.
What Works Well
The biggest strength of "Our Generation" lies in its characters and their development. I found myself genuinely caring about their struggles and triumphs. The female lead is a standout – she's cute, but in a way that feels authentic and not overly saccharine. Her relationships with her family and friends are beautifully portrayed. The male lead, while perhaps a bit of a classic "cold and handsome" type, is also given depth through his flaws and past trauma. I appreciated that he recognized his own shortcomings, like his possessiveness and tendency to hold the female lead back. The author does a great job of illustrating the life of each character. I also liked the historical footnotes and references, which were interesting and informative.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the male lead, I did find myself wishing some of the other characters, particularly the childhood friends, had been explored more deeply. One character, Yu Qiao, had clear feelings for the female lead, and I felt his storyline could have been given more weight. Also, the male lead, while compelling, had the least amount of personality compared to the other characters.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Our Generation" is a sweet and engaging read. While it may not be groundbreaking, it offers a comforting and heartwarming story about love, friendship, and growing up. If you're looking for a character-driven romance with a strong slice-of-life element, I'd recommend giving it a try.
