Okay, so I dove into "Necromancer Before Awakening" with a healthy dose of curiosity, and I've got some thoughts. It's a completed original novel, which is always a plus, and the premise definitely piqued my interest.

First Impressions

The setup is intriguing. Our main character comes from a hidden society of necromancers, already wielding powers and communing with spirits before the world shifts into a Hunter/Gate scenario. Then comes the awakening, and the system throws a wrench in his plans to become a necromancer. But our MC isn't one to back down, and he basically forces the system to give him what he wants, resulting in a boost to his already existing abilities. It's a cool twist on the typical "awakening" trope.

What Works Well

I enjoyed the world-building. The author dedicates time to fleshing out the day-to-day realities of being a hunter: the registration process, gate reservations, detailed descriptions of expeditions, and the effects of abilities and items. I also appreciated the attention given to the world's reaction to these events, government policies, and how things evolve over time. The hints of a larger conspiracy brewing in the background add another layer of intrigue that kept me invested. The fact that the MC already has abilities before the system comes into play is a fascinating take on the genre and hints at some exciting potential conflicts.

Areas of Concern

I do have to admit that I found the main character a bit…flat. While he's certainly competent and resourceful, his personality didn't exactly leap off the page. Also, while the plot has potential, it hasn't quite reached a point where I'm on the edge of my seat. It's a bit too early to tell if it will get there.
