Description
Several years ago, there was a hero who saved the world from the shadow of Nyx, the God of Destruction, who sought to engulf the world. He defeated Thanatos, the King of Death who appears before the end, saving the Kingdom of Ayman. He sealed the evil dragon Tiamat, and in the divine sanctuary of Asgard, he received the blessings of the gods and was acknowledged as the rightful wielder of the holy sword Grandias. Together with his companions, he climbed the Tower of Destruction and, after a fierce final battle, drove Grandias into Nyx’s neck, thus preventing the world’s end. The world rejoiced, and there was no one left who didn’t know the names of the hero and his companions. Afterward, the hero held a grand wedding with Aegina, the princess of the Kingdom of Ayman and also his companion and lover. Everyone believed he would become king of Ayman. But he declined the throne. To grant Princess Aegina’s wish to live freely, he returned to his hometown village. My name is Anak. I am that hero’s companion, and the one who has lived next door to him since childhood to this very day.

My Thoughts on Living Next Door to the Hero
First Impressions
"Living Next Door to the Hero" immediately grabbed my attention with its premise: what happens after the hero saves the world? The story follows Anak, a strategist who played a crucial role in defeating the Demon King. However, unlike his celebrated companions, Anak is burdened by his past decisions and struggles with a deep-seated inferiority complex. This isn't your typical power fantasy; it's a character-driven narrative that explores the psychological toll of war and the complexities of morality.
What Works Well
I found the character of Anak to be incredibly compelling. He's a logical and calculating individual, sometimes to a fault. He's very self-aware of his flaws and not afraid to admit them. This makes him a morally grey character, which adds depth and realism to the story. His strategic mind is fascinating, and his methods are often pragmatic, even if they require sacrifices. I also appreciated the unique storytelling structure, which weaves between flashbacks of Anak's past adventures and the present timeline. This adds layers to his character and helps to explain his current state of mind. The author has created a world that feels lived-in and where actions have consequences.
Areas of Concern
The pacing of the novel can be slow at times, which might not appeal to all readers. While I enjoyed the character development, I can see how some might find the lack of immediate action a bit dull. The author attempts to create suspense by introducing a mysterious figure trying to kill Anak, but I didn't find it particularly gripping.

Final Verdict
Despite its slow pace and some minor plot issues, "Living Next Door to the Hero" is a worthwhile read for those seeking a character-driven fantasy with a morally complex protagonist. The unique storytelling structure and the exploration of Anak's inner struggles make it a refreshing departure from typical shounen fare. I'm giving it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
