My Thoughts on Killing Gods
"Killing Gods" promised a wild ride of action, adventure, and cultivation, and while it delivers on some fronts, I found myself wrestling with its execution. It's a novel with definite highs, but also some lows that left me scratching my head.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise of a reincarnated soldier navigating a xuanhuan world. The blend of modern sensibilities with a classic fantasy setting seemed like it could offer a fresh perspective. And early on, the comedic undertones and the protagonist's "rascally" nature, as some have described him, did provide some entertainment. I was ready to dive into a story of a cunning protagonist rising through the ranks.
What Works Well
The fast-paced plot and the incorporation of elements like alchemy and military strategy kept me engaged. The world-building, with its multiple realms and cultivation system, also showed promise. I appreciated the potential for growth and power progression that the xuanhuan genre typically offers. There were moments where the protagonist's cleverness shone through, and I could see the appeal of his unconventional approach.
Areas of Concern
However, my enjoyment was hampered by the protagonist's inconsistent characterization. At times, his actions felt reckless and irresponsible, almost to the point of undermining his supposed military background. There's a fine line between "rascally" and outright foolish, and I felt the novel occasionally crossed it. The lack of care for consequences and the potential harm inflicted on those around him, especially his maid, were difficult to reconcile with the expectation of a mature, experienced individual.

Final Verdict
"Killing Gods" is a mixed bag. It has moments of brilliance, with its intriguing world and fast-paced action. However, the inconsistent characterization of the protagonist and some questionable plot choices ultimately hold it back. If you're willing to overlook these flaws, you might find some enjoyment in the novel's other strengths. For me, though, it fell short of its potential.
