"Jumping Back and Forth Between O and A" had me intrigued from the start with its blend of comedy, fantasy, romance, and sci-fi elements. The premise of a clueless protagonist navigating a futuristic ABO world sounded like a recipe for chaotic fun, and for the most part, it delivers.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me with the promise of a lighthearted story. The main character, with his high IQ but low EQ, is a refreshing take on the typical protagonist. His obliviousness to social cues and the resulting misunderstandings are genuinely funny. I found myself chuckling at the antics that unfolded as he blithely stumbled through his college life.
What Works Well
The world-building is a strong point. The futuristic setting with mechas and mental powers is well-developed, and the ABO dynamic, while present, doesn't feel as oppressive as it can in some other stories. I appreciate that the author seems to be aiming for a more balanced power structure, focusing on the characters and comedy instead of societal discrimination.
The side characters are also a highlight. They're quirky, well-developed, and add a lot of flavor to the story. I particularly enjoyed the omega character, who is both brutal and cute. I was immediately invested in his well-being. The golden retriever-type character who initially denies his feelings for the MC is also very endearing.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the side characters, I have to admit that the main love interest didn't quite resonate with me. He's described as sweet and lovely but with a distant, cold aura. I can see how some readers might find this appealing, but personally, I prefer a love interest that I can connect with more easily.
