Description
Lan Wu is a mermaid demon princess who runs away from home to escape an arranged marriage. While fleeing, she is spotted by a cultivator who tries to kill her. In desperation, she swallows a pill that conceals her demonic aura, but as a side effect, it also sealed her demonic powers. Ji Lingyue, an aspiring cultivator, happens to be passing through the mountains when she finds Lan Wu listlessly resting beneath a tree. Initially, I was hooked. The world-building is intriguing, and the relationship between Lan Wu and Ji Lingyue blossomed quickly. The early chapters are filled with sweet moments and hints of the drama to come, especially concerning Ji Lingyue's intense aversion to demons, given Lan Wu's secret. It's a classic setup ripe with potential for angst and character growth. I was eager to see how their relationship would evolve once the truth came out.
What Works Well
The fight scenes are well-written, and the plot moves at a good pace, keeping me engaged. The side characters are also a standout, feeling remarkably real and adding depth to the overall story. The translation quality is excellent, which makes the reading experience even more immersive. When the story focuses on the adventure and the blossoming feelings between the leads, it truly shines.

The biggest issue for me is the handling of the power imbalance and the non-consensual acts. The "devoted love interest" tag feels wildly inaccurate during this period, and it's hard to reconcile the sweet, protective Ji Lingyue from the beginning with the obsessive, controlling figure she becomes.

"Into the Sea" is a complex and controversial novel. It has moments of brilliance, with engaging action, compelling side characters, and a well-developed world. However, the dark turn it takes with the relationship between the leads and the handling of sensitive topics makes it a challenging read.
