Description
“When I opened my eyes, I found myself as a character in a game. It was bewildering, but I thought it was worth a try. That was until I saw the skill given to me. It was [Opening Eyes], with no abilities whatsoever.” The story starts with the MC playing a game that is “Very Difficult”, so difficult, in fact, that no one has ever managed to kill the last boss. After 18 years of playing and, having the best attempt be at 30% of the last boss’s HP, he decides to try out a character that he never used. This character was the Slit-Eyed character. It had garbage stats and garbage traits. But, since the MC had ran out of options with every other character, he was trying to see if he could find any secrets with this new character. So he puts in his name ‘Zero’ and presses play… Only to find himself inside the game, as the Slit-Eyed character.

My Thoughts on I’m the Slit-Eyed Character at the Academy, but I’m not the Mastermind
This web novel, "I’m the Slit-Eyed Character at the Academy, but I’m not the Mastermind," certainly has a memorable title, and my experience reading it has been equally memorable, albeit with some highs and lows. It's a story that presents a compelling premise but struggles to consistently deliver on its potential.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the setting: an academy backdrop with game elements and an MC who possesses knowledge of future events. It’s a familiar formula, but one that can be incredibly enjoyable when executed well. The world-building seemed promising, and I was particularly intrigued by the main character's initial characterization. I was ready for a cunning, perhaps even intimidating, protagonist who would cleverly navigate the academy's challenges.
What Works Well
The strongest aspect of this novel is undoubtedly its world-building and the potential of its plot. The author has created a setting with intriguing political dynamics and looming threats from the demon army. The characters, aside from some exceptions, are generally well-developed and have depth. The action is engaging, and the story can be gripping when it focuses on the main plot and the MC's schemes. I also appreciate that the MC isn't simply trying to become the main protagonist of the game, but rather carving his own path.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, a significant issue plagues this novel: the overreliance on slapstick comedy. What started as potentially lighthearted moments quickly devolved into repetitive and often cringeworthy gags. The character Luna, in particular, seems to be a major source of contention. Her clingy behavior and the constant head-biting antics become tiresome and detract from the overall story. Furthermore, the pacing can be uneven, with large chunks of filler content that don't contribute to the main plot. The MC's characterization also suffers from inconsistencies, oscillating between empathetic and cold-hearted.

Final Verdict
"I’m the Slit-Eyed Character at the Academy, but I’m not the Mastermind" has moments of brilliance, particularly in its world-building and plot potential. However, the repetitive and unfunny comedy, coupled with pacing issues and inconsistent characterization, holds it back from reaching its full potential. If you enjoy academy settings and can tolerate a heavy dose of slapstick, it might be worth a try. Otherwise, proceed with caution. I'm giving it a 3/5.
