My Thoughts on I’m Not the Mastermind
"I'm Not the Mastermind" presents an intriguing isekai premise: a protagonist, Yujin, unexpectedly becomes a dragon and finds himself navigating a new world. Initially, I was drawn in by the potential of this setup, but as I delved deeper, I found myself grappling with some conflicting feelings about the execution.
First Impressions
The early chapters definitely hooked me with the unique twist of Yujin becoming a dragon and subsequently becoming a professor at an academy. The idea of a dragon teaching students in a fantasy world is a fun concept. I was eager to see how the story would unfold, especially with hints of potential love interests and the promise of intricate world-building.
What Works Well
I appreciate the novel's focus on character interactions and dialogue. The author seems to prioritize developing the world and the characters within it, rather than simply rushing into action sequences. I found the characters to be believable and the world fascinating, making it enjoyable to see what happens next. The MC's personality, while not overtly flashy, has a certain mischievous charm that keeps things interesting. Also, the inclusion of occasional art, even if AI-generated, adds a nice visual touch.
Areas of Concern
However, I also encountered some issues that dampened my overall enjoyment. The pacing can be slow at times, with meandering exposition that doesn't always feel essential. The plot sometimes feels aimless, lacking a clear overarching narrative or sense of urgency. I was also concerned about the main character's personality, which at times felt inconsistent. The constant misunderstandings, while initially amusing, can become repetitive and frustrating. The author seems to intentionally create scenarios where the main character's actions are misinterpreted. While this can be a source of humor, it can also feel forced and unnecessary, especially when the misunderstandings could be easily resolved.

Final Verdict
Overall, "I'm Not the Mastermind" has moments of brilliance, particularly in its world-building and character interactions. However, the slow pacing, inconsistent characterization, and reliance on contrived misunderstandings hold it back from reaching its full potential. While I enjoyed certain aspects of the novel, I ultimately found it to be a mixed bag. I'm cautiously optimistic that the author will address these issues in future chapters, but for now, I'd recommend approaching this novel with tempered expectations.
