Description
Everyone knows that in any romance novel, apart from the leading couple, there’s always a certain type of male supporting character. He’s either hopelessly devoted to the heroine, tirelessly helping her no matter the cost—even if it means putting up with infidelity. When the heroine is misunderstood by the male lead, he steps in to clear her name. When she faces setbacks in her career, he’s there to support her. But in the end? All he gets is a single line from the heroine: “I’ve always seen you as a brother.” Or, he’s the one opposing the male lead, only to be crushed by the couple’s so-called underdog victory, left with nothing but ruins. Gu Jingyu suddenly finds himself in the role of one of these tragic male supporting characters. The domineering CEO heroine declares, “You’re like a brother to me…” Gu Jingyu retorts, “Thanks, but my mom only gave birth to one child.” The time-traveling heroine offers him a snack with a bright smile. “I made this vegetarian jerky especially for you. I’m sure you’ll love it!” Gu Jingyu stares at her in silence. Do I look that gullible? The plucky underdog protagonist from a cultivation story roars, “Just you wait—thirty years east of the river, thirty years west of the river! Don’t underestimate the poor!” Gu Jingyu doesn’t even bother to respond. He locks the protagonist away until his own ascension.

My Thoughts on I Quit Being The Devoted Supporting Male Character
This web novel is quite the mixed bag, and my experience reading it mirrored that sentiment. While some aspects genuinely hooked me, others left me scratching my head. It's definitely a unique take on the quick transmigration genre, but be prepared for a bumpy ride.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise. A protagonist with emotional detachment transmigrating into different worlds to fulfill the wishes of the original body owners? Sounds promising! The idea of a "cold" MC slowly developing empathy and learning to accept help also piqued my interest. The early arcs, where the MC is OP in the business world and good at predicting villainous actions, were particularly enjoyable.
What Works Well
The biggest strength of this novel, in my opinion, is the character development of the protagonist. Watching him actively seek psychological help to become "normal" and witnessing his emotional growth was genuinely touching. The exploration of his past, particularly his origins in a post-apocalyptic world, adds depth and explains his initial coldness. I also appreciated the author's attempt to subvert the typical Gary Stu trope, portraying the MC as someone who can learn to accept protection and rely on others. The well-translated MTL is also a plus, making the reading experience smoother.
Areas of Concern
However, the novel suffers from a lack of direction and consistency. The plot can feel disjointed, with established settings and character traits being disregarded as the story progresses. The MC's actions sometimes feel out of character, and the challenges he faces don't always feel believable. Also, the complexity of the system and streaming elements felt unnecessary and confusing. The ending is also not well received by some.

Final Verdict
"I Quit Being The Devoted Supporting Male Character" is a flawed but ultimately engaging novel. The strong character development and unique premise are offset by inconsistencies and a lack of direction. If you're looking for a lighthearted read with a focus on character growth and don't mind overlooking some plot holes, this might be worth a try. However, if you prioritize a tightly plotted and consistent story, you might want to look elsewhere. I'd give it a tentative 3/5 stars – read with cautious optimism.
