Description
Ahn Seung-hyun, a college student who lived hiding his identity as a gay man. While on his way to meet an acquaintance he met through a gay dating app, he discovers that the acquaintance is a college classmate trying to out him. He tries to run away but gets into a traffic accident. Just when he thought he had died, he finds himself possessing ‘Han Seung-hyun’, the villainous character from the novel he was reading, and continues living that life. However, there’s a problem: ‘Han Seung-hyun’ is someone who has been given a life sentence with a time limit. Feeling wronged for a moment, Seung-hyun thinks, ‘Since I’m dead anyway, can’t I fulfill my dream of being a rich unemployed person for a little while?’ and resolves to do everything he wanted to do with his remaining life. Can’t he have s*x at least once before he dies? With that thought, Seung-hyun boldly goes to a gay bar to find a one-night stand partner, but ends up getting involved with the one person he absolutely shouldn’t have. “Ju-, Ju-, Ju Jae-young-ssi.” “Yes. Okay, so I dove into "I Became a Villainous Character with a Limited Lifespan" with high hopes, given the premise. A terminally ill protagonist transmigrated into a villainous character? Sounds like a recipe for angst and maybe some unexpected feels. And while it delivered on some fronts, it definitely had its shortcomings.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me. I was intrigued by the MC's "live for today" attitude, especially since he's rich and dying. The idea of him throwing caution to the wind and just enjoying himself was appealing. Plus, the ML's immediate interest in the MC was cute, if a little fast-paced.
What Works Well
The romance, when it works, really works. The ML's devotion is swoon-worthy. He's thoughtful, persistent, and genuinely cares for the MC. Moments of vulnerability between them are touching and emotionally resonant. I also appreciated that the MC, despite his flaws, isn't entirely naive. He contemplates his decisions, making him feel more human. The angst, while at times frustrating, definitely hits the mark for those who enjoy a good cry.
Areas of Concern
However, I found myself growing frustrated with the characters' choices. The MC's constant pushing away of the ML, driven by his fear of hurting him, felt repetitive and often illogical. It created unnecessary drama that could have been resolved with a simple conversation. The pacing could also be uneven, with some plot points dragging on while others felt rushed, particularly toward the end. And I wish the side characters had more depth.
