My Thoughts on God of Cooking
"God of Cooking" promised a delicious blend of cooking, romance, and a second chance, and honestly, it largely delivered. With a solid 4.4/5 rating, it's clear this novel has resonated with a lot of readers, including me.
First Impressions
Initially, I was a little wary. The "game elements" tag made me think it might be another stat-obsessed story, but thankfully, that wasn't the case. The system is present, but it felt more like a tool than a crutch for the main character (MC). It's well-integrated, not awkward, and, as the MC grows, he relies on it less. The initial chapters felt like a tasty appetizer, setting the stage for the main course.
What Works Well
What I appreciated most was the character development. The MC, despite having a "cheat," isn't instantly a cooking god. He works hard, learns from his mistakes, and genuinely strives to improve. I enjoyed how the author incorporates a media presence, offering plenty of comedic relief. The romance is also a highlight. It's a slow burn, fluffy, and doesn't involve a ridiculous harem, which is always a plus in my book. The side characters are also well-developed with their own goals and backstories.
The cooking aspect is also very well done. The food descriptions are enticing, and the author clearly did their research. Even though the novel is from an Asian perspective, it does not hinder the author from introducing a variety of cuisines.
Areas of Concern
If I had to nitpick, it would be that the MC can, at times, feel a little passive. He is often taken care of by others, and his future seems to be planned for him. I would have also appreciated a little more depth into the "God" element of the story.
Final Verdict
Overall, "God of Cooking" is a refreshing and enjoyable read. It's a palate cleanser from the usual blood-thirsty MCs, and the story is well-paced, with engaging characters and mouth-watering food descriptions. If you're looking for a lighthearted novel with a touch of romance, comedy, and a determined protagonist, I highly recommend giving this one a try.
