My Thoughts on Five By Five
"Five By Five" is a journey. A journey into the bittersweet landscape of childhood friendships, unrequited love, and the messy, complicated reality of growing up. It's a novel that definitely left an impression on me, even if it wasn't always a smooth ride.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the promise of a touching love story and the 'coming of age' tag. I dove in hoping for a heartwarming tale of two childhood friends finding their way to each other. And while the core of that promise is definitely there, the path to get there is more winding than I anticipated.
What Works Well
The strength of this novel lies in its characters and the realism of their emotions. The central relationship feels incredibly authentic. You can feel the weight of their shared history, the unspoken feelings simmering beneath the surface. I especially appreciated how the story unfolds through multiple perspectives, allowing me to see each character's vulnerabilities and motivations. This approach really enriched my understanding of their dynamic and made me root for them even harder. The author does a great job of blending past and present timelines to show how the characters have grown and changed over the years. The ending is quite satisfying and makes all the heartache worth it.
Areas of Concern
While I loved the depth of the characters and the realism of their struggles, I can see how the pacing might not be for everyone. The story jumps between multiple timelines, and the constant flashbacks, while adding depth, sometimes felt like they detracted from the present-day narrative. At times, I found myself wanting more focus on their current relationship and less on the extensive backstory. The heavy emphasis on their past, spread throughout most of the book, overshadowed the development of their present-day selves. Also, the inclusion of side plots, like the MC's work as a cop, felt somewhat disjointed. While interesting in their own right, they didn't always integrate seamlessly with the main romance, making the narrative feel a bit scattered.
Final Verdict
Despite its occasional pacing issues and somewhat unfocused structure, "Five By Five" is a worthwhile read for those who appreciate character-driven stories with a touch of bittersweet realism. If you're looking for a fast-paced, straightforward romance, this might not be for you. But if you're willing to invest in a story that delves into the complexities of human relationships and the lingering impact of the past, "Five By Five" will definitely leave you with something to think about long after you finish reading. I'd give it a solid 3.75 out of 5 stars.
