- Farewell to the Hero

Description
“Congratulations on your marriage, Kaindel.” Isaac, who had been Kaindel’s lover—the hero who saved the world from the Great Calamity—learned one day that Kaindel was engaged to a princess. Exhausted by their already strained relationship, Isaac eventually decided to leave Kaindel, who had betrayed him. However, Kaindel wouldn’t let him go. In the end, Isaac fled, unable to endure Kaindel’s refusal to give up either the marriage to the princess or his relationship with Isaac. Not long after, rumors began to spread throughout the kingdom: the hero had gone mad. *** “…….” Kaindel read and reread the last line of the letter, but the words didn’t change. ‘Once loved.’ Isaac really wrote his feelings in past tense. “Ah.” He never thought Isaac would leave him. No, he never believed he could be abandoned. Even if they parted ways, he was sure it would be on his terms. Because Isaac loved him. Because being loved by Isaac was, for Kaindel, something so natural. “Why…….” But it had all been an illusion. “Why didn’t I see it?” Now, the one left behind like a forgotten relic was Kaindel, him. The one clinging to the past, too blind to see the present, was none other than himself. He only realized it now, after he left him. Suddenly, Isaac’s voice, long buried in his memory, resurfaced. Isaac’s smiling face filled his vision, his silver eyes, like clear glass marbles, gleaming with a thousand bright stars, painfully vivid. The sound of Isaac’s innocent laughter echoed in his mind. “I love you,” Isaac had once whispered. When Kaindel’s mind wondered around, did Isaac’s laughter disappeared? No matter how much he tried to remember, the moment escaped him. He searched his memory in vain. As Kaindel traced the days gone by, thick tears began to fall. Like melting ice dripping onto the budding new leaves of spring, his tears left indelible marks on Isaac’s letter. “Where is he?” “…….” “Find him.” “Immediately.” Kaindel finally crumbled. In the place where his arrogance shattered, a deep regret settled in. It was a perfect despair.

My Thoughts on Farewell to the Hero
"Farewell to the Hero" is a web novel that certainly evokes strong feelings, and after diving in, I can understand why. It’s a story draped in the classic tropes of betrayal, angst, and the ever-popular "wife-chasing" crematorium, but its execution seems to be where opinions truly diverge.
First Impressions
Initially, I was intrigued by the premise. A hero, a lover, and a looming sense of betrayal – it had all the makings of a captivating read. However, I quickly encountered the issue that seems to plague many readers: the extensive flashbacks. The story dives deep into the past relationship between the MC and ML, and while some appreciate the context, others find it jarring and detrimental to the pacing.
What Works Well
Despite the issues, "Farewell to the Hero" does have its strengths. The characters, though flawed, are compelling. The ML is a complex figure, and I found the exploration of his internal struggles and his often-clumsy attempts at affection to be intriguing. The MC, while perhaps a bit naive at times, is ultimately relatable in his search for genuine love and respect. I also appreciated the author's attempt to create a morally gray world where actions have consequences and characters must grapple with difficult choices. The supporting cast, particularly the other members of the hero's party, added depth and intrigue to the story.
Areas of Concern
The most significant issue, in my opinion, is the pacing and structure. The heavy reliance on flashbacks, while intended to provide context and build emotional depth, often feels disruptive and poorly integrated. It's easy to get lost in the past and lose sight of the present-day conflict. The constant miscommunications and blame-shifting between the MC and ML can also become tiresome, especially when it feels like a simple conversation could resolve much of the conflict.

Final Verdict
"Farewell to the Hero" is a mixed bag. It has moments of genuine emotional depth and intriguing character development, but it is ultimately weighed down by its structural issues and reliance on frustrating tropes. While the premise has potential, the execution leaves much to be desired. I would recommend this novel with reservations, advising readers to be prepared for a slow-burn story with a heavy dose of flashbacks and miscommunications.
