My Thoughts on Can I Be Loved In This Life?
"Can I Be Loved In This Life?" presents a fascinating twist on the typical child-protagonist trope. I'm always on the lookout for something different, and the premise of a princess who doesn't crave affection immediately caught my attention. While I only read a portion of the novel, the initial chapters presented a unique dynamic that kept me invested.
First Impressions
The opening chapters introduce us to a world of aristocracy and complex family relationships. Bebeana, our MC, isn't your average sweet and innocent child. She's sharp-tongued, doesn't mince words, and seemingly desires anything but love. This immediately sets her apart from many other child protagonists and creates a refreshing dynamic. I was intrigued by her motivations and eager to see how her relationships with her family would develop.
What Works Well
Bebeana's character is undoubtedly the strongest aspect of the story. Her confidence and refusal to act cute for affection make her incredibly endearing. I found myself chuckling at her blunt insults and admiring her unique way of navigating the palace. The concept of a child protagonist who actively rejects love is a refreshing change of pace, and I was eager to see how this played out. The author created a compelling character with clear goals and desires, even if those desires were unconventional. The plot also has a few interesting twists that kept me interested.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, I did have some reservations about the family dynamics, particularly the father's behavior. His wavering affections and apparent favoritism towards the "fake" daughter created a sense of unease. The dynamic felt less like a loving father-daughter relationship and more like a man struggling between his wife and mistress. While I understand the author might be aiming for a complex and nuanced portrayal, the execution fell short, and the father's actions often felt inconsistent and frustrating. It made it difficult to root for his relationship with Bebeana.

Final Verdict
"Can I Be Loved In This Life?" has a lot of potential. The unique protagonist and intriguing premise make it a worthwhile read. However, the inconsistent family dynamics and potentially problematic relationships hold it back from achieving its full potential. While I enjoyed the initial chapters, I hope the author addresses these issues in the later parts of the story. Overall, I'd give it a tentative recommendation, with the caveat that readers should be prepared for potentially frustrating family dynamics.
