My Thoughts on Battle Emperor
"Battle Emperor" is a web novel that I dove into with a healthy dose of curiosity, given its Xuanhuan tag and overall decent rating. It definitely has some strong points, but also a few areas that gave me pause.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked. The story kicks off with familiar, yet comforting, xianxia tropes: revenge for parents, bullying, hidden abilities, and a protagonist who seems down on his luck but is secretly harboring immense potential. It's a recipe that, when done right, can be incredibly engaging.
What Works Well
What kept me reading were the characters. The protagonist, despite his initial setbacks, has a certain charm and decisiveness. I found myself enjoying his interactions with the supporting cast, especially the cunning Qu Yueyi. Their dynamic felt fresh and fun, like a match made to, well, swindle people! The "older sister" figure also added a nice layer of warmth to the story. The romance, particularly the relationship with Ziyan, was cute and added a lot to the overall atmosphere.
Areas of Concern
However, I did find some aspects of the story a bit jarring. The plot armor is undeniably thick. While I appreciate a protagonist who can overcome adversity, there were times when it felt a little too convenient. Also, the villains felt somewhat generic – the typical "you're trash because you're weak" types. I also noticed a certain rushed feeling to the story. Arcs seemed to resolve too quickly, and the build-up sometimes felt wasted.
