My Thoughts on After I Retire, My Disciples Will Regret It
"After I Retire, My Disciples Will Regret It" promises a satisfying blend of betrayal, regret, and the potential for a sprawling harem, and so far, it's intriguing. The premise, a famous protagonist wronged by the very empire he protects, and betrayed by those closest to him, sets the stage for a compelling power fantasy.
First Impressions
The opening chapters immediately grabbed my attention. The setup is classic revenge fare with a twist of the "prodigal son" trope, but the European-inspired fantasy setting and the "gate to another world" element add a unique flavor. I'm immediately invested in seeing how our protagonist will react to those who wronged him.
What Works Well
The strongest aspect so far is the potential for character development, particularly regarding the disciples. The idea of them grappling with their past actions and the consequences of their betrayal is genuinely appealing. The world-building also seems promising, with hints of a larger, more complex world beyond the empire's immediate concerns. The translation quality is notably good, making it easy to get immersed in the story. The slow burn of the plot is nice, there are a lot of novels that rush into the action, but this one takes its time.
Areas of Concern
My primary concern stems from the pacing. While the initial setup is strong, I hope the author maintains momentum and doesn't get bogged down in excessive world-building or repetitive regret arcs. I'm also slightly wary of the harem tag. While I'm not inherently opposed to harems, I hope the female characters are well-developed and have agency beyond simply being love interests.

Final Verdict
Despite my minor reservations, I'm optimistic about "After I Retire, My Disciples Will Regret It." The premise is engaging, the world-building is intriguing, and the potential for character development is high. If the author can maintain a good pace, avoid excessive tropes, and give the female characters agency, this could be a truly satisfying read. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on future chapters.
