My Thoughts on Zui Xing Mai Shen
Zui Xing Mai Shen, or 'Drunken God of Wine', promised a comedic and spicy historical romance, and for the most part, it delivered. It’s a story about two young masters, Fang Jing Zai and Feng Ruo Chen, whose initial animosity paves the way for some rather… interesting developments.
First Impressions
The premise is undeniably intriguing. We have Fang Jing Zai, a somewhat clueless and frivolous young master constantly overshadowed by the seemingly perfect Feng Ruo Chen. A drunken encounter at a brothel leads to a contract – Fang's body for three nights or a hefty debt. This sets the stage for a cat-and-mouse game, with Feng seemingly orchestrating events to ensnare Fang. The initial setup is funny and full of potential.
What Works Well
The core of the story lies in the dynamic between the two leads. Their bickering and misunderstandings are genuinely entertaining. Feng’s calculated pursuit of Fang, masked beneath a veneer of gentlemanly behavior, is a refreshing twist on the typical ML archetype. I also appreciated the exploration of the family business aspect, adding a layer of depth beyond the romance. The fact that they are a reversible couple is a definite plus, offering a dynamic that's not always common in BL novels. When it works, the humor lands well and the interactions are cute.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the translation quality seems to be a significant issue. Many readers found it difficult to follow the plot at times, and the humor was often lost in translation. This is a shame because the story's potential is clearly hampered by these issues. Additionally, while the "enemies to lovers" trope is enjoyable, the character development feels somewhat rushed. Some readers also felt that the MC’s character shifts too drastically, becoming a more typical "puppy seme" towards the end, which detracted from the initial dynamic.

Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, Zui Xing Mai Shen has its charms. The unique characters, the underlying plot involving family businesses, and the reversible relationship offer something different. However, the translation issues are a significant barrier. If you're willing to overlook these shortcomings and enjoy a lighthearted, albeit sometimes uneven, historical romance with a good dose of spice, then it might be worth a try. I'd rate it a tentative 3.5 out of 5 stars, hoping for a revised translation that can truly bring out the story's full potential.
