My Thoughts on When The Phone Rings
"When The Phone Rings" definitely left an impression. It's a blend of drama, mystery, and romance that kept me guessing, even if it wasn't always smooth sailing. The initial premise intrigued me, and I was curious to see how the story unfolded.
First Impressions
I'll admit, at first, I wasn't entirely sold. The male lead, Baek Sa-eon, comes off as cold and distant, which can be a bit off-putting. And the female lead, Hong Hee-joo, seemed a little naive in her early attempts to connect. However, I kept reading, and I'm glad I did because things started to click into place.
What Works Well
The story's strength lies in its ability to reveal layers as you delve deeper. Both main characters have hidden depths. I appreciated that their relationship didn't turn them into caricatures; they retained their competence and drive. Baek Sa-eon, in particular, stood out. He's not just another "cold on the outside, warm on the inside" trope. He's calculating, knows what he wants, and remains in control, even when his feelings for Hee-joo are strong. I also found the author's writing style to be engaging. The descriptions brought the emotions to life.
Areas of Concern
The storytelling isn't perfect. Some of the flashbacks felt a bit muddled, making it tricky to piece together the full picture. This required me to work a bit harder to follow the narrative, which could be a turn-off for some readers. Also, the special extra chapter felt a bit repetitive. While I understand the intention, it seemed to rehash Baek Sa-eon's trauma, which had already been explored in the main story.
Final Verdict
Despite some flaws in its execution, "When The Phone Rings" is a worthwhile read. It offers a unique blend of genres, complex characters, and a story that gradually reveals its secrets. If you're willing to be patient with the occasional narrative stumble, you'll likely find yourself invested in the journey of Baek Sa-eon and Hong Hee-joo. I give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
