Description
After changing jobs, Shen Duoyi encounters his new boss, Qi Shi’an. They had a brief entanglement during their youth. As misunderstandings clear up, they start over and grow closer, giving rise to sparks that eventually ignite a sweet romance. Qi Shi’an is a versatile senior trader skilled in fighting, diving, and finance. Shen Duoyi is a highly capable senior actuary with good looks, good character, and high emotional and intellectual intelligence. Both are academic elites — a suave top and a sweet bottom, both wealthy. The summary from hundreds of years ago: Shen Duoyi’s parents died in an accident when he was young, leaving him to be raised by his grandfather. As a teenager, he worked part-time jobs to support himself and ended up working as a server at an entertainment venue, where he unexpectedly encountered a young Qi Shi’an, who was already a patron at that age. Due to a misunderstanding, one thought the other was not a decent person, the other thought that he could be bought with money. When they meet again, it seems like a lifetime has passed. Qi Shi’an now sits in the office of a senior partner, impeccably dressed, exuding professionalism. Shen Duoyi, having shed his youthful awkwardness, now presents himself as a refined white-collar worker. They become superior and subordinate, gradually discovering each other’s hidden strengths and flaws, embedding themselves in each other’s hearts and minds. The story mainly takes place years later, with a few teenage flashbacks sprinkled in. The summary is a mess — don’t take it too seriously. Both are academic elites: Senior Trader x Senior Actuary. Top: mature, rational, and long-legged. Bottom: smart, kind, and handsome. (Trying my best to hype them up.)

My Thoughts on What Lies Within
"What Lies Within" promised a mature romance and a slice of life, and while it delivered on some of those fronts, my experience was a bit of a mixed bag. The premise, a reunion romance set against the backdrop of a company where the protagonist finds himself working for his former lover, had me intrigued from the start.
First Impressions
The initial setup is quite appealing. The "lovers reunited" trope is a classic for a reason, and the college/university setting hinted at a heartwarming story of growth and reconciliation. I went in expecting a character-driven narrative with a strong emotional core.
What Works Well
The potential for a heartwarming story of couple growth is definitely present. The "manly gay couple" aspect is refreshing, offering a portrayal of a mature relationship navigating the complexities of life. The promise of a "slice of life" narrative also appealed to me, suggesting a focus on everyday moments and realistic character interactions. The story is complete, which is a definite plus for readers like me who prefer to binge-read.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, I found myself struggling with some aspects of the execution. The character writing felt somewhat lacking. I had difficulty connecting with the protagonist on a deeper level. His motivations felt unclear, and his personality didn't quite shine through. The male lead, while described as handsome and successful, also seemed inconsistent, making it harder to invest in his character.
The development of their feelings felt rushed and unconvincing. I struggled to understand the foundation of their relationship and found it hard to believe in their connection. This lack of emotional depth made it challenging to fully immerse myself in the story.
Final Verdict
"What Lies Within" has a lot of potential, and the promise of a mature, heartwarming romance is definitely there. However, the issues with character development and pacing ultimately hindered my enjoyment. While the completed status is a definite plus, I'd recommend approaching this one with tempered expectations. It might be a good fit if you're looking for a light, easy read and aren't too concerned with in-depth character development.
