My Thoughts on Until The Real One Shows Up
"Until The Real One Shows Up" presents an intriguing premise: a protagonist reborn into a past life where she already messed up her "isekai" do-over. While I found the initial chapters promising, my overall experience was a mixed bag. It's a story with high points, but also some frustrating pitfalls.
First Impressions
The setup immediately grabbed my attention. Anastasia, our protagonist, isn't just transmigrated; she's regressed. She already tried to become the beloved empress, failed spectacularly, and now knows she needs to play the villainess role to avoid utter disaster. This twist on the familiar transmigration trope felt fresh and exciting. I was eager to see how she would navigate this tricky situation, balancing her past love with her perceived destiny.
What Works Well
Many readers praised the character development, particularly Anastasia's. I agree that her internal struggles are compelling. The author does a decent job of portraying her conflicting emotions: her lingering love for Wilhelm, her desire to protect the empire, and her determination to stick to the original plot. The slow-burn romance, at least initially, felt earned. I also appreciated the translation quality, which made for a smooth and enjoyable reading experience. And, I find myself enjoying the supporting characters and I love a good bromance.
Areas of Concern
However, as the story progressed, I started to see some cracks. Several readers pointed out inconsistencies in Anastasia's actions. Despite resolving to act the part of the villainess, she often defaults to her "nice girl" tendencies, which can be frustrating. I also felt that the praise showered upon Anastasia for minor improvements in her behavior was overdone and repetitive. It sometimes felt like the plot was dragging, focusing too much on superficial details and not enough on substantial conflict. The ending also seems to have left many readers unsatisfied, with some feeling it was rushed and anticlimactic.

Final Verdict
"Until The Real One Shows Up" has an intriguing concept and moments of genuine emotional depth. However, the execution falls short of its potential. While I enjoyed certain aspects, the inconsistencies and pacing issues ultimately left me feeling underwhelmed. It's an okay read if you're looking for something relatively low-effort within the genre, but don't expect a groundbreaking masterpiece.
