Toxic Marriage
By paminku, 파민쿠
2025
Description
One day, Freya receives an order from the emperor to marry the so-called devil, the Margrave of Niflheim. He was a man shrouded in countless rumors, such as being a monster who bewitched people, a vicious ugly man, and a madman who celebrated slaughter. In reality, he looked like a devil who was just terribly bored, an ordinary man who was locked up behind a high castle wall awaiting his death. However, his infinitely deep black eyes were filled with a freezing hatred. “Are you scared?” The man looked down with those eyes and whispered to Freya. “I’m not treating the woman who will carry my child carelessly.” Ironically, it sounded like he was whispering that he would surely kill her when she had fulfilled her duty.

My Thoughts on Toxic Marriage
"Toxic Marriage" definitely caught my eye with its blend of adult romance, fantasy, and a dash of the supernatural. The premise of an arranged marriage with potentially cursed undertones in a European-inspired setting felt like a promising start. After diving in, here's what I've gathered.
First Impressions
The initial chapters did a decent job of setting the stage. We're immediately introduced to Freya, our female lead, and the complicated circumstances surrounding her marriage. The story hints at a larger mystery, drawing me in with the promise of unraveling secrets within this seemingly gilded cage. I was definitely intrigued by the world-building, and I'm curious to see how the supernatural elements will play a larger role as the story progresses.
What Works Well
I particularly appreciate Freya's character. She's not a pushover, which is a huge plus in a genre that sometimes leans towards damsels in distress. She's proactive, and it's refreshing to see her navigate the complexities of her situation with a degree of self-awareness and determination. Even when faced with rudeness from those around her, she holds her own, which I find admirable. I also quite like the supporting characters, especially her guardian, who seems to offer genuine support and guidance.
Areas of Concern
While the male lead is presented as handsome and calculating, I haven't quite warmed up to him yet. His boredom and the way it seems to drive his actions makes him feel a bit…distant. I'm hoping to see more depth and development from him as the story unfolds.
Final Verdict
"Toxic Marriage" has potential. The female lead is strong, the world-building is interesting, and the plot hints at a deeper mystery. While the male lead hasn't fully won me over, I'm willing to stick around and see how their relationship develops and how the supernatural elements will be woven into the story. It's a solid read for those who enjoy a blend of romance, fantasy, and a proactive female lead.
