Description
A classmate made obscene photos of her. “What do you need, student?” The man she met for the first time at the police station opened with that question. “I… don’t need money, sir.” “Sir,” when Park Chigyeong repeated the word to himself, his expression subtly changed. She caught the slight furrow of his brow. “I heard that’s what people call prosecutors. Did it… offend you?” Exhaling a puff of cigarette smoke, he smiled faintly. Was that a smile of annoyance or amusement? Taeri couldn’t help but wonder. “But why have you been acting so bold since earlier?” Park Chigyeong, who had been casually exchanging nods with the detectives passing by, took a step closer. “Student. Do you find it ridiculous because I’m being polite? Do you think we’re friends just because I’m smiling at you?” At a distance where he could have touched her with just an outstretched hand, he leaned forward. His lips brushed against her ear as he whispered, his tone sharp as if he was grinding his teeth. “Stop trying to provoke me and just name your price, kid.” As Taeri stood in the lukewarm temperature of March, neither cold nor warm, she felt her palms slowly begin to sweat.

My Thoughts on To a Treacherous Stranger
"To a Treacherous Stranger" is a wild ride, to say the least. I dove into this novel expecting a dark romance, and it definitely delivered, though not always in the ways I anticipated. It's a story that clearly evokes strong reactions, and I can see why.
First Impressions
The premise is intriguing: a college student, Taeri, crosses paths with Park Chigyeong, a much older and powerful prosecutor. There's a time skip, and suddenly Taeri's life is drastically different, intertwined with Chigyeong in ways she never imagined. The initial setup had me hooked, eager to see how their complex relationship would unfold.
What Works Well
The male lead, despite his flaws, is undeniably captivating. Chigyeong is manipulative, domineering, and definitely a walking red flag, but there's a certain allure to his power and the way he handles situations. I found myself drawn to his character, even when I knew I probably shouldn't be. The author does a great job of portraying him as a complex individual, and his obsession with Taeri is both disturbing and fascinating. The smut is also undeniably hot, if that's your thing. The story explores themes of power, obsession, and control, making it a gripping read if you enjoy morally grey characters and complicated relationships. The strong translation also enhances the reading experience, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the story.
Areas of Concern
The female lead, Taeri, can be a bit frustrating at times. While she's described as intelligent, her actions don't always reflect that. I struggled to connect with her at certain points, and her motivations weren't always clear. The plot can also feel a bit disjointed, with inconsistencies that detract from the overall believability. Additionally, the male lead's behavior crosses into dangerous territory, and it's important to acknowledge the problematic nature of the relationship dynamics.

Final Verdict
"To a Treacherous Stranger" is a flawed but ultimately engaging read. If you're looking for a morally ambiguous romance with a dominant male lead and aren't afraid of some toxicity, this might be up your alley. However, be prepared for inconsistencies, a frustrating female lead, and potentially triggering content. I'd rate it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. It's a guilty pleasure, but one that requires a certain level of tolerance for problematic themes.
