My Thoughts on The Villainous Guide’s New Life
"The Villainous Guide’s New Life" has definitely captured my attention, and I'm eager to see where the story goes. This supernatural romance set in a guideverse has a lot of potential, and I'm enjoying the dynamic between the characters so far.
First Impressions
Initially, I was a bit unsure about the main character, Tae-rim. At first glance, he seemed like he might be a pushover, too easily swayed by the powerful espers around him. However, as I delved deeper into the story, I was pleasantly surprised to see him develop a strong sense of self, establishing clear boundaries and acting in ways that felt authentic to his past experiences as an Omega.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of this novel is the way Tae-rim approaches his career. He's portrayed as a mature, proactive individual who tackles problems head-on. I especially appreciate that he doesn't rely on the male lead to solve his issues; instead, the dynamic is almost reversed, with the ML being somewhat dependent on him. This subversion of typical tropes is refreshing. The male lead, Juho, also intrigues me. He seems to be playing a character, a wolf in puppy's clothing. The dynamic of the younger ML trying to win over the older MC is a fun twist, and I’m interested in seeing how their relationship evolves.
Areas of Concern
While I am enjoying the story, Juho's behavior does raise some questions. I find his "childlike" act around Tae-rim a bit much at times. While I understand he's trying to be endearing, it occasionally feels forced and over the top. I hope this aspect of his character mellows out as the story progresses.
Final Verdict
Overall, "The Villainous Guide’s New Life" is a promising novel with a unique dynamic between the leads and a refreshing take on the guideverse genre. Despite my minor reservations about the male lead's initial characterization, I'm invested in the story and eager to see where it goes. I'd recommend giving it a try if you're looking for a supernatural romance with a mature, proactive protagonist and a complex relationship dynamic.
